Founded in 1948 by the Discalced Carmelites, St. Joseph’s Press in Trivandrum has grown from modest beginnings to become a pioneer in advanced printing technology in kerala.
History
Humble Beginnings to Industry Leaders
St Joseph’s Press, Trivandrum is an institution owned by the Malabar Province of the
Order of the Discalced Carmelites. It was established in the year 1948 and had a very
humble beginning with two Treadle Machines and a few cases of Types in Malayalam
and English. St Joseph’s Press had its steady growth over the 7 decades of its service to
the public. The futuristic vision of the founding Fathers of the Press adopted the right
technologies responding to the needs of the printing industry and reading the signs of
the times.
The growth chart of St Joseph’s Press could be depicted in the following
way: Hand Composing and Treadle Presses in the fifties, Automatic Cylinder Press and
Block Making in the sixties, Lithographic Printing in the Seventies, Photo-type setting
and Large Format Offset Presses in the eighties, Computer Typesetting and Multi-Colour.
Offset Printing in the nineties, CTP and Multi-colour Web Offset in the 2Ks.

Rev. Fr. Peter Thomas, the first manager of SJP, along with Fr. Archangel and Fr. Aloysius, were visionaries who laid the foundation. Fr. Archangel later built the first Press building.
